White House Announces Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.
Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Court Actions
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.
An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations took place on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
