They're Applying in America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently research predicted his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for others, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing too.

The obvious and direct reality that the Savior in biblical accounts calls for a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion something of a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Within Us

Hence I have become encouraged to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In both situations does it mean feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both modesty and faith, a combination that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
