In a inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
