India's capital Rises to Toxic Haze Post Diwali
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Extremely High Air Quality Levels
Several parts of the capital showed an air quality index above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe level established by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy limits.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that covers the capital as colder weather sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the newly elected regional leadership petitioned the supreme court to seek a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and environment".
Legal Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during designated time windows throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Several air quality sensors throughout the city registered contamination peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the festivities.
Persistent Environmental Problem
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have continued as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Near Diwali, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the worst readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
The situation in Delhi is caused by a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating toxic haze that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air descends.
Health and Economic Toll
The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to various research.
This pollution results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is calculated to be causing 10,000 early deaths per year in Delhi.
