Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Forged our Modern Globe
One can find many candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes the author. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid automated cutter, which converted logs into boards using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, which unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial and cultural supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The First True Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial true industrial machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part transformed its rotary motion into vertical action to power the cutting blade. Another component transformed the spinning motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate them so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every downward stroke and advancing with each upward motion. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental parts.”
